Effective eco-friendly, organic products that will keep your skin looking healthy and beautiful.
There’s been a lot of buzz about the new beauty and skin care line by Juice Beauty, with Gwyneth Paltrow signing as the face of the brand, and the accolades seem well-deserved. When it comes to moisturizers, the brand’s line is worth trying―but they’re not the only effective eco-friendly, organic products on the market to keep your skin looking healthy and beautiful. Here are 14 moisturizers for every skin type from reputable, earth-conscious companies who take pride in using green, organic, and Fair Trade ingredients.
Normal Skin/Sensitive Skin
Desert Essence Daily Essential Moisturizer
($8, Desert Essence)
This company has been creating natural skin care since 1978. Certified cruelty-free from Leaping Bunny, none of its products contain artificial colors or fragrances. If you’re in the market for a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer that absorbs quickly, this one is a great choice. Lightly scented with geranium essential oil, it also contains jojoba oil, aloe vera, and safflower seed oil, which are very gentle, making this an ideal product for sensitive skin.
Jason Natural Gluten Free Facial Lotion
Jason Naturals has been at the forefront of (you guessed it) natural, eco-friendly skin care since 1959. Based in California, the brand can now be found across the globe. This gluten-free moisturizer (which is GFCO certified) is part of the company’s new gluten-free line. It contains Vitamin C, believed to brighten skin tone; chamomile, to soothe the skin; and aloe vera, which hydrates and heals. Fragrance-free and made without parabens, sodium lauryl, laureth sulfates, petrolatum, artificial colors, or phthalates, it will help any skin type look its best.
Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer
Tired looking skin will get a boost of instant moisture from this oil-free lotion. Made with lemon peel oil, jojoba esters, spearmint leaf oil, coffee bean, and Panax ginseng, just one application will get your skin glowing. Additional ingredients are rosemary, chestnut, and barley, all known to help balance and hydrate skin.
Juara Sweet Black Tea and Ginger Oil-Free Moisturizer
Dermatologist tested, 100% vegetarian, and free of mineral oil, phthalates, sulfates, artificial colors and fragrances, this gel-cream works to minimize pores and regulate oil production. The product includes ginger and cinnamon to clear the skin from breakouts and blemishes. It also helps the skin retain its elasticity, and protects it against free radicals.
Alba Botanica Hawaiian Oil Free Moisturizing Cream Refining Aloe and Green Tea
Users have been raving about this nourishing, yet featherweight, moisturizer for years. It contains certified organic aloe and green tea; which are known to soothe, heal, and hydrate the skin. Acne suffers have noticed a change in flareups and skin texture within a month of using it and reviewers rave about how the product has changed their complexion.
Shea Terra Organics Black Seed and Calendula Creme
($26, Shea Terra Organics)
According to reviewers, this is a miracle cream. It quickly reduces and eliminates breakouts, redness, and even wrinkles. USDA certified organic pure aloe juice is used as its base, then it’s mixed with certified organic black seed oil, calendula, certified organic Nilotik shea butter, and other ingredients that make it feel like a fluffy soufflé. Fast drying and absorbing, the creme creates a matte finish. It can be used as a primer, or you can dust a little loose powder or bronzer on your face to finish off your look.
Crude Everything Oil
($18 for 1 oz/$54 for 4 oz, Live Crude)
Antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and non-comedogenic, this product is made with organic plant and essential oils. Brimming with linoleic acid, Vitamins A, C, E and D, it helps clear up acne-inflamed skin. In fact, a study in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found a 25% reduction in size of the acne and diminished acne activity on the skin after using linoleic acid for one month. While applying oil to oily skin may seem counter-intuitive, stripping your skin of its natural oils will actually make oily skin worse. This product uses the oil to lift impurities out of the skin and deeply cleans pores, without taking away that vital natural moisture. It can be used as both a cleanser and a moisturizer, making it an eco-friendly skincare product that really does do it all.
Ildi Pekar Skincare Moisturizer
($78, Ildi Pekar)
Pekar studied skin care in her native Hungry and after moving to New York City, she and her salon have been cited in countless magazines, including Vogue, Marie Claire, Allure and W Magazines, as one of the top skin care experts/salons in New York City. Her loyal clientele includes Miranda Kerr, Lindsay Ellingson, and most of the Victoria’s Secret Angels, who seek her products to keep their skin flawless. Her skin care line is so organic, it’s hard to know if you should nibble on it, or apply it. Trilipiderm contains no mineral oil, petroleum, petrolatum jelly, silicones, or parabens, and has never been tested on animals.
Amala Beauty Hydrating Face Cream
($68, Amala Beauty)
A 2011 Eco Beauty Award Finalist, this face cream is formulated specifically for dry skin and made with certified organic jasmine. The company uses whole plants in this product, as well as an organic emulsifier (made from milk) to hydrate, nourish, and soften dry, damaged skin.
Juice Beauty Green Apple Age Defy Organic Moisturizer
($45, Juice Beauty)
The company has partnered with Gwyneth Paltrow for over a year, boosting its public profile; however the products are as amazing as they’ve always been. Their eco-friendly, organic skin care line is based on the power of fruit stem cells, particularly green apple stem cells. After applying the moisturizer, an immediate difference in skin tone and texture is noticeable. (As a side note, I tried Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Instant Eye Lift Algae Mask and noticed immediate results.) This moisturizer hydrates and smoothes the skin while brightening the complexion. Utilizing a uniquely formulated fruit stem cell cocktail, it’s mixed with alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10, Vitamin C, peptides and DMAE, evening out the complexion over time for firmer, healthier looking skin.
Spinster Sisters Re-Cup
($95, Spinster Sisters)
Colorado-based Spinster Sisters started back in 1994, when founder Kelly Perkins wanted to use products with ingredients she could actually pronounce. She began by making natural soaps, and now her products are being sold nationwide. (Many of the herbs and botanicals used in Spinster Sister products are grown by Kelly herself.) Re-Cup is a wrinkle repair serum that harnesses naturally occurring copper tripeptide (GHK-Cu) and antioxidants to restore your skin’s balance and vitality. The vegan, hypoallergenic serum contains aloe, jasmine extract, and jojoba, but doesn’t have any artificial fragrance, coloring, sulfates, or phthalates, and isn’t tested on animals. Reviewers noticed an immediate difference in their skin’s appearance, and after daily usage for several months on their face and neck, a lessening of wrinkles and scars.
Juara Sweet Black Tea and Rice Moisturizer
Some skin care companies are so beloved by beauty junkies and skin care aficionados, word takes a while to get out for fear that everyone will look as good as the pros. Juara is just such a brand. Professional makeup artists have been using this 100% vegetarian, certified cruelty free company’s products for years. They’re impressed with how quickly this organic moisturizer reduces the appearance of fine lines. It plumps up the skin immediately, and after prolonged usage, helps the skin to retain elasticity and moisture. Made with rice bran, avocado, and candlenut oils, Vitamin B, illipe butter, and fermented sweet black tea, the product contains no sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, or gluten. Blend a few drops into your foundation for a tinted moisturizer—it’s rich in texture and not greasy.

($25, Kelly Teegarden)
