Dad takes daughter on dates to teach her the meaning of ‘gentleman’

“If our daughters don’t get our gaze, they’re going to look for it from people we don’t approve of.”

I was extremely blessed while growing up to have my dad be my biggest fan. He was at every school and sporting event and constantly affirmed me and took an interest in my life. Because of him, I knew to look for that kind of love and support in a husband.

Sadly, many little girls do not have fathers who effectively show them their value and consequently, they end up with low self-esteem or in relationships that leave them disrespected and taken for granted.

In his talk, Pure Fatherhood, Catholic speaker Devin Schadt described a time when one of his five daughters decided to put on a ballet show for the family. Randomly throughout the five-year-old’s performance, Devin said, “She’d just gaze up right at me. She’d just make sure I was watching. Not mom, not her sisters, but me. And it hit me … so hard. She’s looking for her father’s gaze.” He went on to caution the men in the audience, “If our [daughters] don’t get our gaze, they’re going to look for it from people we don’t approve of.”

A father’s treatment of his daughter is absolutely crucial in shaping the woman she will become and the life she will lead.

Because of that, it’s no wonder this adorable Facebook post highlighting Noah Slomski and his three-year-old daughter Arianna, went viral. Slomski’s wife, Caitlin, explained in the caption, “My husband decided once a month he will take our little girl out on a ‘date’ … He helped her pick out a dress … held the door open for her, and made her feel like a princess … She will always know how she deserves to be treated because her dad sets such a high example.”

If only more dads could follow Slomski’s example, we’d have a lot more empowered women in our world.
