Flower patterns are usually the signature of spring-summer fashion season, but this year the catwalks of Milan, New York and Paris fall catwalks have been flooded with florals. So why not join the high-fashion trend for less and update a boring old sweater with some surprising petal decals?

To make your top really stand out, choose an energizing fall color felt (we chose a bright and warm red). Then simply arrange your petals as an applique of soft felt orchids, trickling down on one shoulder. We guarantee you’ll look absolutely blooming.

You will need:

Print the orchid pattern at the bottom of this article, and cut out the orchids. (If you’re artistic, you can also free-hand your orchid petals as you see fit. Just make sure you draw a variety of petal sizes.) Then place your paper petal pieces on the felt, trace with a pencil and cut out the same shapes from your felt.

For a 3D effect cut out a few petals twice and then sew them together filling the inside with yarn pieces or old teddy bear filling leftovers.

Place all of the orchid parts together and lay them out where you want them to be on the sweater. That way, you’ll make sure you have all the pieces before you start sewing them on.

Sew the single felt sheet petals along the edges first. When you’re ready to layer on the double padded ones only sew the base of the petal into the middle of your flower, so the edges pop off the sweater.
There is an infinite number of ways to organize your own orchid pattern, just use your imagination! You can opt for a symmetrical one around the neck, create an orchid necklace all along the collar of a sweater, or you can place single orchids all over the sweater.

As you can see above, we decided on an asymmetrical pattern on one shoulder, and then placed a single orchid on the bottom part of the opposite sleeve to add a little uniqueness as well as balance the look.
