It’s impossible not to pray after seeing this image of a boy suffering from cancer (PHOTO)

Jessica Metinger posted a photo of her son Drake, sick from the effects of chemo, to show “reality”: “Life isn’t pretty, and cancer destroys a person.”

Watching your child battle cancer is one of the most heartbreaking things imaginable for any parent. With a single, intimate photo that went viral on Facebook, one mother opened up her home and heart to social media to let others know what it is really like to be the parent of a 10-year-old son being treated for leukemia, a cancer that attacks the bone marrow and stops the normal production of blood.

Jessica Medinger snapped this photo of her son, Drake, (whom she lovingly nicknamed “Stinky Joe”) in pull-ups, grimacing in pain as he leaned on the bathroom sink for support. It’s a personal photo, not something most of us usually get to see, and we think Jessica was brave to show this painful side of her life to the world. Not only does the photo show the aching reality of childhood cancer, but it also offers a unique look into the struggles of a mother when she watches her child suffer against a disease, fighting for his life. Don’t we all know someone in our lives like Jessica, who is dealing with something so unfathomable to us? But do we really know what they are going through?

Drake has fought cancer since 2012, when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia b-cell. Jessica wrote: “From the moment I found out I was pregnant till future forever, he has been my reason for life. He is my smile, my love, my heartbeat. He is also my tears, my heartache, my frowns. He is my life.”

Although not all parents have loved their child through cancer or a chronic illness, Jessica sets an incredible example of the many facets of love, and how we can’t separate the pain from the joy. Her smile, her heartache, it’s all the same life. Since posting the photo on the LoveWhatMatters Facebook page, it has been shared 105,000 times, no doubt prompting just as many prayers and positive thoughts along the way. Let’s do our part and keep the movement going. Both Jessica and Drake need our prayers.
