6 Emmys moments we can’t stop talking about (PHOTOS)

No awards show is complete without a few surprising laughs … or a few genuinely beautiful moments. Here’s what stood out to us at the Emmy Awards this year.

The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards may be over, but our excitement over television’s premiere event still hasn’t worn off. After a rousing Sunday night broadcast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with host Jimmy Kimmel, we’re still talking about these six memorable moments:

1. Best performance

Singer Tori Kelly’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at the Emmys, played during the show’s In Memoriam segment, was stunning. A tribute to recently deceased stars like Natalie Cole and Gene Wilder, Kelly, who often talks about her Christian faith, took up an acoustic guitar and sang slowly, thoughtfully, and soulfully. It was the perfect tone and pace for a segment that was all about reflection and remembrance.

2. Best heckle

Kimmel wasn’t the only one cracking jokes last night. When he lost the Variety Talk Show category to John Oliver, Matt Damon (who has a long-running joke “feud” with Kimmel) stepped in to give the host some good-natured teasing—equipped with an apple and a very “What’s up, doc?” attitude:

3. Best red carpet mama

Kerry Washington proudly put her baby bump on display in a bold cutout gown, but we’re more impressed with the statement she made than what she wore. Rather than hiding her pregnancy, the Scandal and Confirmation star made it very clear that she thinks motherhood is beautiful, and she’s proud of her growing belly. “When you’re a pregnant lady on the red carpet, you need to feel like a superhero,” Washington told Extra. Fitting words for a mother whose ensemble featured a cape.

4. Best Jimmy Kimmel joke

So many TV actors wish they were even invited to the Emmys (let alone get nominated or win), that it’s hard to believe that some nominees don’t show up at all! But the legendary actress Maggie Smith, who plays the whip-smart and sassy Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess on Downtown Abbey, has made it somewhat of a habit. Though she’s been nominated for an astounding nine Emmys and won four, Smith has never attended the ceremony. Kimmel (respectfully) poked fun at the star we all adore.

5. Best plus-one

In addition to Kerry Washington, another stand-out parent last night was Liev Schreiber. Rather than leave his nine-year-old son Alexander at home, Schreiber brought him along to enjoy the festivities. Even cuter was the fact that the two dressed in identical tuxes, right down to the pocket square. Very sharp!

6. Best retro-chic dress

Actress Michelle Dockery’s ruffled show-stopper proves that feminine ruffles are back en vogue, and are certainly not just for little girls; they can be grown-up and sophisticated, too. The Downton Abbey star paired her belted and tiered Oscar de la Renta gown with black Stuart Weitzman heels for a classy finish.
