Your health

What’s in:

Marital bliss. There’s apparently more to the expression “happy wife, happy life” than meets the eye—breaking research suggests that people who are happy with their spouses live longer. Guess it’s time to call a cease-fire over who gets the remote control!

What’s out:

Pimple shame. Grown-ups get breakouts too, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A new study found that people who get acne have younger (not just younger-looking) skin than their flawless faced friends.

Food & beverages

What’s in:

Coffee and beer. In a banner week for beverages, National Beer Day was on Wednesday and National Coffee Day on Thursday. Bonus? If you played your cards right, you likely scored your favorite brew for free.

What’s out:

Così. As it turns out, fast-casual food chain Così couldn’t hold a candle to the competition, aka Panera. On Wednesday, it announced it is filing for bankruptcy. RIP, chipotle pumpkin soup.

Flora & fauna

What’s in:

A mama manatee. Veterinarians at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut were in for a delightful surprise when they discovered a wayward manatee rescued from Cape Cod’s cool waters has a bun in the oven. Say it with me now: awwwww!

What’s out:

The meerkat’s cute and cuddly street rep. According to a new study of violent behavior in the animal world, meerkats are the most murderous mammal known to science—T-t-t-timon? Tell us it’s not true, buddy.

Movies

What’s in:

Harry Potter meets America. Well, sort of—the new trailer for the J.K. Rowling-authored Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them just dropped and, to be honest, it really does look magical.

What’s out:

A live-action Lion King. Disney fans are straight-up skeptical about the news that the classic ’90s animated movie will soon be retold as a live-action film. Here’s hoping we’re wrong about this one, but …

Television

What’s in:

“This is Us.” Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore? What’s not to love? This new hour-long drama from NBC proved to be a ratings powerhouse, leading to a full-season of 18 episodes being ordered already.

What’s out:

Will & Grace, 2.0. For a brief, shiny moment this week, fans were convinced the hilarious foursome of Will, Grace, Jack and Karen would soon be returning to our TV screens. Alas, their reunion was just a video ad urging people to vote.

The final frontier

What’s in:

The red planet. SpaceX founder Elon Musk went live this week with a video showing what it might be like to settle Mars, which he predicts will happen in the next century. So, uh, where do we get our tickets?

What’s out:

The Rosetta space probe. Scientists are saying sayonara to this intergalactic info-gatherer just ahead of its planned crash-landing on a comet. Of course, since the scientists have decades worth of work analyzing its data still, the probe gets the last word.

Weather

What’s in:

Tropical storm Matthew. In what’s turning out to be a busy storm season, ol’ Matthew is nearing hurricane strength in the Caribbean Sea as we speak.

What’s out:

The world’s ideal CO2 threshold. Welp, here’s a bit of apocalyptic news for you—scientists say the world has now surpassed the 400ppm mark for CO2 levels, indicating a critical climate change juncture.

Pumpkin-inspired products

What’s in:

Pumpkin spice hair. Pegged fall’s biggest hair color trend, pumpkin spice hair is a pretty warm brunette shade with red, coppery undertones. Hair trends come and they go, but here’s hoping this one actually sticks around past the season of pumpkin spice everything.

What’s out:

Pumpkin flavored … French fries? Yes, you read that right. As part of their Halloween promotion, McDonald’s locations in Japan just announced they’ll be offering French fries doused in pumpkin and chocolate sauce.
